Care of Your Newly Seeded Lawn

Taking care of your new lawn often requires no more work overall than taking poor care of the lawn. A lawn that is properly watered, fertilized and mowed has fewer problems with weeds, disease and insects. A well kept lawn also remains lush and attractive giving you much more enjoyment

Watering Requirements

Your newly established seed or hydro seeded lawn needs to be kept moist for a period of 10-14 days. Please do not flood the lawn. These watering requirements should be practiced according to weather conditions. If the weather is 90 degrees the lawn needs to be watered morning, noon and night. If the weather is just 65 degrees it should be watered morning and night. The soil must be kept moist. This is very important as the seed germinates. If the seed dries out it will die and your lawn will not grow in a uniform pattern. After the first 10-14 days you can cut back the watering to 2-3 times per week at one inch of water per application

Mowing Practices

At 21-28 days time, with the average temperature being 75 degrees, your lawn should be 2-3 inches tall. Turn the water off a day or two prior to mowing the lawn. The newly established lawn should only be mowed down approximately 1/3 of the plant height. For a lawn that is 3 inches tall you would only cut 1 inch off the top. You can continue to mow your newly established lawn at weekly intervals throughout the growing season.

Fertilizer Requirements

We recommend fertilizing your lawn every 30-40 days. In a newly established seed or hydro seeded lawn you should fertilize for the first time at your first or second mowing. We recommend fertilizing every 30-40 days after the first application
